The challenge

The uneasy conversation.

Whenever you're not getting the results you want, it's likely because of a conversation that either you are avoiding or haven't handled properly.

When conversations turn crucial, most of us choose poorly: we either speak abrasively to force what we want damaging the relationship, or we stay silent and sacrifice results.

The health of any team can be measured by the lag between identifying a problem and discussing it.

Frequently asked questions

What people usually ask us.

What is Crucial Conversations?
Crucial Conversations is an official Crucial Learning course that teaches you how to speak up when stakes are high, opinions differ and emotions run strong, improving results without damaging the relationship. It is grounded in decades of social-science research and combines theory, in-room practice, real-situation videos and tools you can use the next day.
How long is the Crucial Conversations course?
It runs one or two days in person (8 or 16 hours), five 2.5-hour virtual sessions, or 6 to 8 hours of self-paced on-demand learning. Every format includes a six-week reinforcement experience.
What languages is Crucial Conversations delivered in?
It is delivered in more than 27 languages, including Spanish, English, French, German and Italian, always with native trainers and participant materials in the local language.
Does Crucial Conversations include a certificate?
Yes. All formats include the official Crucial Learning certificate of completion, valid for internal development plans.
Why do I avoid difficult conversations even when I know I should have them?
Because under conflict the brain pushes us to choose between attacking (forcing our position and damaging the relationship) or staying silent (avoiding conflict at the cost of the result). The course teaches a third path: staying in dialogue under tension without blowing up the relationship. A team's health is measured by the time between spotting a problem and talking about it.
Does Crucial Conversations work for technical teams skeptical of "soft skills" training?
Yes, and that is often where it has the most impact. The course is not about "being nice"; it is about solving problems that cost time, money, relationships and talent: real client results report a 30% improvement in billing costs at AT&T and a 55% drop in safety incidents in one year at Pride International.
How is Crucial Conversations different from a normal communication course?
Most communication courses teach you to "communicate better" in general. Crucial Conversations focuses on the high-tension moment, where almost everyone fails, and drills concrete skills for it. It is hands-on training with everyday tools, not theory about assertiveness or communication styles.
How is Crucial Conversations different from Radical Candor?
Radical Candor is mainly a feedback philosophy for bosses: it pairs "caring" with "saying things straight" and centers on the manager-report relationship. Crucial Conversations is broader and more operational: it gives a step-by-step method for any important conversation (with your boss, a colleague, a client or at home), not just for giving feedback. Crucial Conversations trains the skills in the room with real practice. In short: Radical Candor tells you what attitude to bring to feedback; Crucial Conversations gives you the how, in an applicable way and far beyond feedback.
What is the difference between Crucial Conversations and Crucial Accountability?
Crucial Conversations prepares you for any high-stakes conversation; Crucial Accountability applies those same skills to performance management and adds the diagnosis of why someone fell short of expectations. Many companies run Crucial Conversations first and Accountability as the natural next step.
Can Crucial Conversations be delivered privately for my company?
Yes. We bring it into your organization in person or virtually, adapted to your sector and your teams' real cases, coordinated with your L&D team so it fits the initiatives you already have running.
Do I need prior knowledge to take Crucial Conversations?
No. The course starts from scratch and works for any level of responsibility. Each participant practices with the real conversations they bring to the room.
How does the six-week reinforcement experience work?
After the training, for six weeks participants receive micro-practices, reminders and short challenges that ensure transfer to the job. It is one of the elements with the biggest impact on learning retention.
