The challenge

Leadership is influence

When facing persistent challenges, leaders often resign themselves to poor results or launch change initiatives that consume time and resources to little effect. Leadership isn't just about creating inspiring visions or sound plansβ€”it's about mobilizing others to execute them.

The good news is that human behavior can be influenced with surprisingly predictable success when you know where to look.

The most important capacity you possess is your ability to influence behavior, that of yourself or others.
What it is

What is Crucial Influence

Built on five decades of social science research, the Crucial Influence Model reveals why people do what they do and how any leader can influence behavior to achieve lasting results.

The key lies in the Six Sources of Influence: personal, social, and structural factors. Effective leaders know how to combine them to overwhelm even the most persistent behaviors.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Crucial Influence?
Crucial Influence is an official Crucial Learning course, based on five decades of research, that teaches why people do what they do and how any leader can influence behavior to achieve results that last. At its core is the six-sources-of-influence model.
How long is the Crucial Influence course?
It runs one day (8 hours) in person, three 2.5-hour virtual sessions, or 4 to 6 hours of self-paced on-demand learning. Every format includes a six-week reinforcement experience.
What languages is Crucial Influence delivered in?
It is delivered in more than 27 languages, including Spanish, English, French, German and Italian, always with native trainers and participant materials in the local language.
Does Crucial Influence include a certificate?
Yes. All formats include the official Crucial Learning certificate of completion, valid for internal development plans.
What are the six sources of influence in Crucial Influence?
The six sources of influence explain why people behave the way they do. The model crosses three dimensions (personal, social and structural) with motivation and ability, explaining why any behavior occurs and how to change it. The core idea: behavior change fails because only one source is worked on, while lasting change activates several at once.
Why do change initiatives fail in my company?
Almost always because the strategy is incomplete, pulling a single lever (a memo, an incentive) and ignoring the rest of the system. The course teaches you to identify which sources are blocking change and to activate several at once, which is what sustains it; client data confirms it: 93% adoption of a new Six Sigma process at Xerox.
How is Crucial Influence different from a normal leadership or motivation course?
Motivation courses assume the problem is willingness. Crucial Influence starts from the fact that people often want to but can't, or the environment pushes against them, and diagnoses the six sources before acting, making change actionable.
How is Crucial Influence different from Cialdini's "Influence" and other persuasion methods?
Influence, by Robert Cialdini, explains the seven principles of persuasion (reciprocity, commitment, social proof, authority, liking, scarcity and unity) that get someone to say "yes" in a specific interaction, and it is used to sell, negotiate or convince in the moment. Crucial Influence is not about getting a one-off "yes" but about changing behavior in a sustained way at scale within a team or organization. Cialdini offers individual persuasion tactics, whereas Crucial Influence focuses on a diagnostic model (the six sources) to understand why a behavior persists and how to build a plan to truly change it. In practice they complement each other: Cialdini for the sale or immediate influence; Crucial Influence to make a culture, safety or process change last over time.
Does Crucial Influence help me change my own behavior, not just others'?
Yes. The same six-sources model applies to personal habits as well as team or organizational change. Many participants apply it to themselves first.
Who is Crucial Influence for?
For leaders at any level, owners of cultural-change initiatives, safety teams and transformation project leads, where the challenge is not knowing what to do but getting people to actually change how they behave.
Can Crucial Influence be delivered privately for my company?
Yes. We bring it into your organization in person or virtually, adapted to your sector and your teams' real cases. And if you have a specific change challenge, we don't just train: we support the implementation, designing the influence plan with you and measuring progress.
What happens after the training if I have a real change challenge?
If you come with a concrete challenge (process adoption, a safety behavior, a culture change), we work with you beyond the classroom: we apply the six-sources model to your case, design the implementation plan and support the follow-up over the following weeks to ensure the change holds. The training is the starting point, not the finish line.
